New York Chiropractic Nutrition Idea: Black Pepper & Turmeric

Black Pepper. Turmeric. Just spices? No! Black pepper and turmeric have long histories as flavorings and medicines.  Such spicy histories! Dr. Gary Stefanick shares some of the current reports about the benefits of black pepper and turmeric: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and even anti-cancer. New York chiropractic patients are healthy people often seeking a healthier approach to disease management and prevention. Dr. Gary Stefanick adds some spice to this healthier approach and New York back pain relief!

Dr. Gary Stefanick looks for healthier approaches to living just as chiropractic demonstrates itself to be for our New York chiropractic patients and families at Dr. Gary Stefanick. Adding some spice is one such way. Research coming out of South Asia and Middle East countries - where spices are fundamental to traditional foods of the region – shows indications of cure for centuries even while deficient in scientific explanation thus far. Today, biologists are examining the medicinal value of spices and showing support for the antimicrobial effects they have and just how they may halt the progression of microorganisms. (1) New York chiropractic patients and families appreciate that extra value of their spicy food! Dr. Gary Stefanick does!

The spices black pepper (peperine) and turmeric (curcumin and curcuminoids) work together well. Asian foods have tasted better and been healthier for years! Curcumin and other curcuminoids – chemical compounds in turmeric – are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial in nature. Black pepper – similar to capsaicin – heightens the power of turmeric. Curcumin is not very bioavailable, so black pepper lets it be better absorbed.  One study reports that if 2 grams of curcumin are taken alone, there is not a noticeable serum level reaction. If it’s taken with 2mg of black pepper, curcumin’s absorbability increased 2000%! Together, black pepper and turmeric offer to control obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes; relieve peptic ulcers (by preventing H-pylori bacteria growth); prevent some cancers, reduce pain even potentially neuropathic pain (by initiating transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1); and alleviate inflammatory conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and the like). (2) Dr. Gary Stefanick is well aware of inflammation’s role in back pain whether it’s chronic or acute. New York inflammation plays a role in disease and in back pain. New York chiropractic care by spinal manipulation and nutrition advice helps back pain and related inflammation.

Some of the most astonishing research on the value of spices like black pepper and turmeric indicate their effects on prevention and treatment of cancers. Lung, liver, breast, stomach, colorectal, cervix and prostate cancers seem to respond well to black pepper, turmeric, black cumin, ginger, garlic, saffron and chili pepper. These spices contain bioactive compounds – curcumin, thymoquinone, piperine, capsaicin - that encourage cell death, halt tumor creation, movement and attack, and prepare tumors to be sensitive to radiation and chemotherapy treatments. (3) When a New York cancer patient is fighting cancer, these responses to spices like black pepper and turmeric are certainly positive!
